Twelve years ago I made my annual visit to Washington, DC. As usual I accompanied my students to Arlington National Cemetery to honor the men and women who have served our country. Of particular interest is the Tomb of the Unknowns…..unknown war dead from WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam…at least until 1998. That was the year that LT Michael Blassie, a United States Air Force pilot was disinterred and his remains were returned to his family for burial in their family plot in St. Louis “Michael served and fought and died for his country. Then he served as the unknown soldier representing the thousands who haven't come home for 14 years," said Pat Blassie, his youngest sister. "He is still serving today because he now represents those who need to come home.” The Tomb of the Unknowns is no longer just a tribute to the unknown dead of conflict our country has been involved in, it is a symbol of hope.
